Chapter Twenty-Seven: The “Johnny Can’t Read” Myth

For as long as I’ve been teaching I’ve been hearing the “Johnny Can’t Read” myth.  When I arrived at Bronx public schools 11 years ago, there was a chorus of it.  The short version goes something like this:

Johnny can’t read; therefore he acts out in class.
